Cleveland Browns release QB Derek Anderson

The Cleveland Browns today terminated the contract of quarterback Derek Anderson, the team announced.

Anderson joined Cleveland via waivers from Baltimore in 2005 and spent the last five seasons with the Browns. He appeared in 39 games with 34 starts during that time and completed 587 of 1,109 passes for 7,083 yards with 46 touchdowns and 45 interceptions.

“I want to thank Derek for everything that he gave to the Cleveland Browns organization over the last five years,” said Browns Head Coach Eric Mangini. “He did everything we asked of him and it was a pleasure to coach such a competitive person. I want to wish him all the best in the future.”

Cleveland Browns trade for QB Seneca Wallace

Cleveland Browns executive Mike Holmgren reached out for one of his favorites Monday.

Seattle traded quarterback/wide receiver Seneca Wallace to the Browns for an undisclosed late round pick in 2011.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter and ESPN.com’s John Clayton first reported the trade.

Wallace’s best season was 2008 when he started eight games in Holmgren’s last season and threw for 1,532 yards and 11 touchdowns. Wallace started two games last season while starter Matt Hasselbeck was injured.

Seneca Wallace said he was a little bit surprised by the suddenness of Monday’s trade, but not shocked he told 950 KJR AM. He had heard about the rumors.

“It came fast,” Wallace said. “I wasn’t going to say I was shocked.”

The Cleveland Browns sign LB Scott Fujita & OL Tony Pashos to deals

The Cleveland Browns today signed linebacker Scott Fujita (pronounced Foo-GEE-ta) and offensive lineman Tony Pashos (pronounced PAH-shos) to multi-year contracts as unrestricted free agents, the team announced.  Fujita, an eight-year veteran, spent the past four seasons with the New Orleans Saints.  Pashos, a veteran of seven NFL seasons, spent last year with the San Francisco 49ers.

“We are extremely happy that we were able to get Scott and Tony signed so quickly,” said Browns General Manager Tom Heckert.  “They are two players we had targeted from the start of free agency.  Both are smart, tough and physical – the type of players that the Browns are looking for.

“Scott possesses tremendous size for a linebacker, and this will allow him to play inside or outside in our 3-4 defense.  He has been a starter throughout his career, has been exposed to several different defensive schemes and has been successful in all of them.  He is a great leader and played a big part in the success that the Saints achieved last year. Cleveland Browns QB situation could look entirely different in 2010

Multiple reports are surfacing suggesting the Cleveland Browns are in talks with several teams about acquiring a new starting quarterback.

Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports the Browns are involved in trade talks with more than one team that could bring a new quarterback — or two — to town.

According to a league source with knowledge of the situation, the Browns are discussing quarterbacks “on different levels.” It appears the Browns have concluded they are more apt to upgrade the quarterback position through trade rather than free agency.

While Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post adds the Browns’ quarterback situation will have a completely new look next season, and don’t be surprised if Brady Quinn is not with the team come training camp. Derek Anderson has a large roster bonus due in March that the Browns clearly won’t pay, forcing his release. And based on what I heard, no one in the organization feels Quinn is the answer, long or short term.

Either way this goes, the Cleveland Browns are making some waves and are amped to make their roster better.

Cleveland Browns release back-up center Hank Fraley

The Cleveland Browns today terminated the contract of offensive lineman Hank Fraley, the team announced.  Fraley spent the last four years with the Browns during which time he appeared in 63 games with 52 starts.  In 2009, he played in 15 games with four starts.

Even though the Browns gave Fraley a sense of security three weeks ago when they told the back-up center that the team wanted him in Cleveland, in the end they parted ways.

It should not have came to a huge shock seeing as the new GM Tom Heckert thought so little of Hank Fraley that he traded him to the Cleveland Browns a few years ago.  This will be the second time Heckert has gotten rid of Fraley.

Depth at the center position now comes into question for the Browns.
