Cleveland Browns make offer to Mike Holmgren

According to a Browns spokesman, talks are still ongoing with former Seahawks and Packers coach Mike Holmgren.
Jim Donovan on WKYC-TV (Channel 3, Cleveland) reported on its 6 o’clock news that the Browns have offered Holmgren the position as top football executive at a salary of $8 to $10 million per year.
A report by ESPN’s Chris Mortensen said Holmgren would like his future decided by Christmas, and that he would seek about $10 million per season to head the Browns football operations.
Mangini said in his press conference that he would not get into too much of the conversation the two had on Tuesday, except to say, “We talked about a lot of things, team, different aspects of the season, things like that.”
“I’ve known Mike for a while, may not not as well as I’ve known (Eagles coach) Andy (Reid) or (Miami’s director of football operations) Bill Parcells. We had a good conversation at the owners meetings a few years back.”
“I think he’s good guy,” Mangini said. “I thought it was a good conversation. He was very talented as a coach, I thought it was a good positive conversation.”
To cloud the Holmgren situation, news out of Washington this morning suggests longtime VP of Football Operations Vinny Cerrato has resigned from the Redskins.
“We agreed that the franchise needs someone different in this position,” Cerrato said. “I’m thankful to Dan Snyder and other members of his ownership team for the opportunities I’ve been given over the years.”
Holmgren has ties to Jim Zorn and Sherman Lewis, fueling speculation that Snyder could make a play for the former Packers & Seahawks coach.
However, Jay Glazer reports this morning that the Redskins are in talks with former Raiders and Buccaneers executive Bruce Allen. Which comes somewhat as a surprise.
The pending arrival of Allen undoubtedly would trigger speculation that the next move would be to dump coach Jim Zorn and pursue Jon Gruden, who partnered with Allen both in Oakland and Tampa. The only problem with that is that Gruden has signed with Monday Night Football through the 2011 season and vowed that he would not coach until that time.
