BEREA, Ohio — Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow sprained his right shoulder in Monday night’s win over the Buffalo Bills.

The injury isn’t likely to keep him out for an extended period.

Winslow played through a painful injury to his left shoulder last season. He got hurt while catching a 16-yard pass that set up kicker Phil Dawson’s 56-yard field goal in a 29-27 win.

After making the reception, Winslow was wrapped up by Bills linebacker Paul Posluszny near the sideline and fell hard on his shoulder.

An MRI taken yesterday revealed no structural damage in Winslow’s shoulder. Coach Romeo Crennel says Winslow would not practice today and that the five-year veteran’s status for Sunday’s game against the Texans would depend on getting strength and range of motion in his shoulder.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Cleveland Browns coach Romeo Crennel says it was his decision to bench quarterback Derek Anderson in favor of fan favorite Brady Quinn.

Crennel made the switch on Monday, one day after Anderson threw a costly interception in Cleveland’s 37-27 loss to Baltimore. Crennel cited Cleveland’s poor offensive production, the club’s 3-5 record and Anderson’s inconsistency as his reasons for starting Quinn on Thursday night against Denver.

Crennel said the change was not based on backlash from Cleveland fans.

Quinn will have just one full day of practice before his first NFL start. Anderson expressed disappointment at his demotion but pledged to help Quinn, the former Notre Dame star who has attempted just eight passes as a pro.

Browns receiver Joe Jurevicius most likely will sit out the rest of the season, according to coach Romeo Crennel.

Jurevicius, 33, has been on the reserve/physically unable to perform list since the beginning of the season. He underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in January and then had at least three more surgeries to clean out a staph infection in the knee.

“We’ll be coming out with a statement about Joe maybe toward the end of the week or the beginning of next week about what his status is, but generally it doesn’t look very good,” Crennel said Wednesday.

JACKSONVILLE, FLA.: Kellen Winslow will rejoin the Browns this morning and be welcomed back, General Manager Phil Savage said Sunday after a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

‘’I spoke to Kellen [Saturday] night,'’ Savage said. ‘’I made a couple points to him in regards to he and the team and he and I’s relationship. . . . I understand some of the points he made and we had a good conversation.'’

The Browns rescinded Winslow’s suspension Saturday night and converted it to a $25,000 fine.

Savage said any information about Winslow’s illness, which Winslow said was a staph infection, had to come from Winslow. The GM said the team never has decreed a player should keep medical information private.

‘’That’s not our decision,'’ Savage said.

Savage was asked whether he could say why Winslow initially was hospitalized.

‘’I don’t know. Bill, has it been disclosed or is it still a private matter?'’ Savage asked Bill Bonsiewicz, the Browns’ vice president of communications. ‘’I think it’s all in a gray area right now. I think the best thing to say is, ‘No, you can ask him.’ ‘’

This letter serves as formal notification that, pursuant to Article VIII, Section 1 of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement and the Cleveland Browns 2008 Maximum Discipline Schedule, you are being disciplined for engaging in Conduct Detrimental to the Club.

Specifically, on October 19, 2008, following our game against the Washington Redskins, you made public statements that were inappropriate, inaccurate, portrayed the Club in a false light, and diminished the Club’s reputation. In addition, you engaged in profane verbal abuse of a Club’s public relations member in the locker room following the Redskins game.

Your actions, which violated your obligations under the Cleveland Browns Maximum Discipline Schedule, Article LV, Section 6 of the CBA, and Paragraph 2 of your NFL Player Contract, have significantly disrupted and adversely affected the Cleveland Browns team and organization, and cannot be tolerated.

Accordingly, you are hereby suspended without pay for one week for Conduct Detrimental to the Club. Your suspension will begin immediately and will end on Monday, October 27, 2008, at 8 a.m., at which time you are directed to report to the Club facility to resume work. Throwback uniforms for a throwback opponent.

That will be the case for the Browns on Monday night when they host the New York Giants in a nationally-televised game at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

To honor the fact that this will be Cleveland Browns Legends weekend, with Warren Lahr, Paul Wiggin, Walter Johnson and Eric Metcalf being inducted into the Browns Hall of Fame at halftime, the Browns will wear throwback uniforms. These are the uniforms - helmets and all - worn by the club from 1957-59.

Keep in mind that, aside from a few changes, the Browns have basically the same uniforms today that they did back in that inaugural season of 1946. Thus, a throwback uniform for this team is more like going back to the future.

In any event, the Browns will wear:

*Brown jerseys, nearly identical to the ones that are worn by the Browns on every other Sunday this year. It should be noted that in 2006 the Browns went back to the white and orange striping on sleeves that was used until the late 1960s. In between, the Browns used different striping that incorporated brown and feather striping — a thin space between the various stripes.

*White pants with thinner stripes than the ones that are used today, running down the outside of each leg. These pants were used through 1995, when the original Browns franchise moved to Baltimore.

*Brown socks with white and orange striping that matches the striping on the uniform sleeves. They were worn into the late 1960s.

*Orange helmets with a single white stripe going down the middle from front to back, with the players’ jersey numbers in brown print displayed on both sides. Brown stripes on either side of the white one were added in 1960 and remain part of the Browns regular helmet. The numbers were removed after the 1960 season and have not appeared since other than for these throwback purposes.

*Black shoes. The Browns wore this color through 1974, at which time they went to white. They began wearing black again in 2006. Read the rest of this entry »

BALTIMORE — Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards will start, but linebacker Willie McGinest, wide reciever Donte’ Stallworth and guard Ryan Tucker will not play.

Wide reciever Syndric Steptoe will start at receiver, while rookie Alex Hall will start at linebacker in place of McGinest.

Seth McKinney will start at guard for Eric Steinbach, who was ruled out due to a shoulderinjury yesterday.Kris Griffin, Sean Jones and Martin Rucker are also out.

Jay Glazer of FOX reports that the Kansas City Chiefs called the Browns this week to inquire about the availability of quarterback Brady Quinn.

The Browns declined to discuss the possibility.

The move suggests to us that the Chiefs could be using their very high 2009 first-round pick on whoever emerges as the top quarterback in the draft.

Browns guard Eric Steinbach, who previously was listed as questionable for Sunday’s game at Baltimore with a shoulder injury, did not make the trip with the team, and consequently will not play.

Seth McKinney likely will take Steinbach’s place in the starting lineup.

Receivers Braylon Edwards (shoulder) and Donte’ Stallworth (quad) also are questionable for the Week Three AFC North matchup, but they apparently made the trip with the team to Maryland.
