Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson working out together PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mary Kay Cabot; Plain Dealer Reporter
Monday, 28 April 2008

Brady Quinn Brady Quinn, whom the Browns consider their first-round pick in this year's draft, said he and starter Derek Anderson are already pushing each other in the off-season program.

"All the quarterbacks are there and we're in quarterback school as well, so we've been in there working hard, watching a lot of film and meeting a lot during the week," said Quinn at a draft party Saturday at Cleveland Browns Stadium. "It's been good for all of us. Derek and I will put pressure on one another and it will really help our team in the end."

Quinn reiterated that all three Browns quarterbacks, including Ken Dorsey, get along great and have fun.

"The quarterback room in general is a very friendly learning environment," he said. "Everyone's just trying to learn and get better. We're all pretty young and it's a good room."

Quinn said he's been getting acclimated to the Browns newest receiver, free agent pickup Donté Stallworth.

"He's been there for the off-season program and he's doing a great job," said Quinn. "You can tell he's going to add a ton of value to our offense in being able to do some different things for us that are going to be fun for the fans to watch."

Most players have participated in the program to some extent, although Kellen Winslow is rehabbing his knee in San Diego and Braylon Edwards has been training some in Detroit as well.

"All those guys have been in," said Quinn. "It's been fun to get some reps with those guys. It's the second time around for all of us in this offense, so everyone is getting more comfortable with how [offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski] views things and how he thinks."

Quinn said he's benefited from quarterbacks coach Rip Scherer tweaking his mechanics.

"We've worked on a different way of gripping the football and just different fundamentals as far as how you're loading the ball when you're getting ready to throw," he said. "We've also worked on overall drop mechanics and things like that."

He said the new techniques "are a work in progress. When you've ingrained a certain way of moving, throwing and playing for a such a long time, obviously it's tough to change. But it's been working out well so far."

The first day of organized team activities open to the media will be May 14. Last year, Quinn threw three interceptions on the first day, and then threw very few in the rest of the OTAs.

"The game won't be as fast," he said. "Things will be second nature to me. It's not going to be a situation like it was last year. But I felt confident and comfortable last year when I was in there playing and I just look forward to getting out there and playing again."

Finley:

The Browns have shown interest in Jermichael Finley, a raw, young tight end prospect from Texas.

Finley (6-4½, 244) enters the draft as a redshirt sophomore because of family issues, and most experts agree he could've used another year in school.

Mel Kiper Jr. wrote in his draft report, "Had he returned to school and performed to the level expected, you would have been looking at a likely late first-rounder in the 2009 draft."

With a daughter and another child on the way, Finley decided it was time to go pro. The NFL told him he'd probably be a fourth-round pick if he came out now.

"The NFL is every football player's dream, and when my NFL grade came back, it was encouraging, and I felt like it was in my best interest to enter the draft," Finley said at the NFL Combine. "I've worked really hard for three years at Texas to prepare for this, and I think I'm ready for the challenge."

Finley started all 13 games for the Longhorns in 2007, catching 45 passes for 575 yards and two touchdowns. His best effort was against Oklahoma, when he caught four passes for 149 yards and one touchdown.

Nfldraftscout.com said: "some compare him to Browns tight end Kellen Winslow, but Finley lacks the burst and explosion off the snap that Winslow displays when eating up the defender's cushion. . . . He might have the best hands of any tight end in this draft."
