Yesterday's deadline for underclassmen to apply for entry to the 2006 draft came and went with only two more juniors formally announcing their intention to leave school early and enter this year's draft. Both were from Southern California as SS Darnell Bing and OT Winston Justice each informed the school they would skip their senior seasons. Bing and Justice, both of whom are rated as potential first-round picks this year, join three other USC juniors - RBs Reggie Bush and LenDale White and OG Fred Matua - in declaring themselves eligible for April's draft. The five Trojans are part of an unusually large number of underclasssmen to jump to the upcoming draft.
Indeed, there are 52 underclassmen On our unofficial list of underclassmen entering this year's draft.. In past years, the number has been either in the high 30s or low 40s. And this year's many still grow as there are always several less well-known players who file with the NFL without making a formal announcement and only appear on the NFL's final list of underclassmen eligible for the draft which will be released in several days. At the same time, those underclassmen who have applied to enter the 2006 draft, but have not signed with an agent, have until 4 PM ET on Wednesday to withdraw their applications. |
