What a week for surprises and coaches from nowhere.  The NFL GM's and powers that be looking for head coaches have really turned some rocks to find this weeks gems.  Some of these guys the last few years have been laughed out of town by one team only to resurface in another town and have mediocre success.  Others are coordinators that have never been mentioned before as coaching canidates and yet they land the big jobs.  What a week, indeed.  Let's break it down for you...

Sean PaytonNEW ORLEANS SAINTS - Where do we start with this team.  The NFL expected a team that lost their home stadium to Hurricane Katrina, had to play on the road all season, and whos sleeping accomodations were not exactly NFL quality to produce wins and be successful.  WRONG!  The Saints were bounced around like bad step-children of the league on their way to a 3-13  season.  Aaron Brooks was benched, Jim Haslett was fired, rumors spread that the team was moving to LA.  They Saints front office felt that maybe a Bill Parcells disciple can turn around their misfortunes so they hired 42 year old Sean Peyton.   Payton's spent the past three seasons as Parcells' assistant head coach/passing game coordinator with the Dallas Cowboys, and he's logged nine years in the NFL after nine more as a well-traveled college assistant.  A team source said that Payton signed a four-year contract with the team.  Good luck to the S'aints fans, their gonna need it to get through season 1. Rod MarinelliDETROIT LIONS - Matt Millen had better double check his door locks before he goes to bed in the city of Detroit.  If these fans have to endure one more bad luck season primarily because of bad GM decisions, they are going to snap.  Why you ask?  Millen has turned the reins of their football team over to a relative unknown coach outside of Tampa Bay.  The guy spent the last 10 years as a defensive line coach with the Bucs.  I am talking about 56 year old Rod Marinelli.  Matt Millen said that Marinelli reminds him of some the games greatest coaches like Joe Paterno, Bo Schembechler, and a lot of John Madden.  For his own sake, I hope he is right.  The Lions are a league worst 21-59 since Millen took over in 2001.  Personally, Millen should have stayed in the booth and I am sure Lions fans agree.

Mike McCarthyGREEN BAY PACKERS - The Packers have found their new man although it may have been a very hard sell for the Packer faithful.  It's 49ers OC Mike McCarthy.  The hard sell part is that McCarthy's old team was dead last in the league in yards per game and 30th in scoring.  Not exactly stats Packer fans want to hear.  (SOURCE)

ST LOUIS RAMS - OUT was Mike Martz, OUT was interim coach Joe Vitt, IN is Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Scott Linehan.  This is Linehan's first head coaching job.  The Rams have announced a press conference for Friday to introduce Linehan as their new head coach.
