(CBS4) DENVER - Denver Police Detective Jack Bishop didn't know what was going on when the promotions director from Newsradio 850 KOA walked into Mountain States Bank and handed him a cell phone.
The station picked him as the winner of a "Pay It Forward" contest. The prize? Two tickets to the AFC Championship game on Sunday.
Life has been difficult for Bishop since Mother's Day of last year. That's when he and his partner, Detective Donnie Young were ambushed and shot while working off-duty at a baptism party. Young was killed. Bishop survived thanks to his bullet proof vest.
"Not a day goes by that you don't think about the guy. You're standing right next to the guy and you're the one that got lucky," Bishop says. He wears a bracelet in honor of his fallen comrade. "He's always with me and I'm always thinking about him."
Bishop's wife Diane was in on the surprise. She let KOA know that he was working at the Mountain States Bank today. The president of the bank was happy to play along, saying Detective Bishop really deserves this.
As for the game on Sunday, Bishop says, "I'm originially from Ohio, so being a Cleveland Browns fan, there's nobody I'd like to see defeated more than the Steelers."
