The "straight" pass pattern requires that the tight end run at an angle directly away from the ball to the sideline. The tight end must keep in mind that he probably will receive the ball by his fifth or sixth step, so he must look quickly over his outside shoulder and get his hands up and back, little fingers together, ready to make the catch.
