The Browns avoided losing one of their best players on defense Monday when they agreed to terms on a new contract with defensive end Orpheus Roye. The two sides were expected to sign the deal later today. Roye, 33, could have been an unrestricted free agent on Friday. He consistently has said he wanted to finish his career with the Browns and the new deal allows him to do that. Terms were not immediately available. The sides previously had agreed on a three-year contract. Roye joined the Browns in free agency in the 2000 season after beginning his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. His 95 tackles in 2005 led all Browns' linemen and were a career high for Roye. He also had three sacks and led the team with 12 quarterback pressures. The Browns are also trying to re-sign offensive left tackle L.J. Shelton before NFL free agency begins on Friday.
