The Browns have selected Kamerion Wimbley of Florida State with the 13th overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. A defensive end at Florida State who will play outside linebacker for the Browns, Wimbley was drafted to bring speed and pass-rush ability to a Browns team that finished 32nd in the NFL in sacks last season. The Browns were able to trade down and still get the player they desired. The Browns traded the 12th pick to the Ravens, who used the pick on Oregon’s Haloti Ngata. In return, the Browns acquired the pick they used to get Wimbley, plus a sixth-round pick. Wimbley recorded 7.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss in his senior season, his first as a full-time starter. He had 2 sacks in the Seminoles’ season-opening victory over Miami and was tied with top overall draft pick Mario Williams of North Carolina State for the ACC sack lead before suffering a knee injury last fall and missing three games. The injury forced Wimbley to the sideline for the first time in his career; he played in 49 of 52 career games. He returned for the Orange Bowl and played in the Senior Bowl in January. Wimbley, 22, measured at a shade under 6-foot-4 and 248 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine in February. Wimbley graduated a semester early from Northwest High School in Wichita, KS and participated in Florida State’s spring practice in 2002. Five months later, as a 210-pound true freshman, he was a key special teams player. He had a career-high 38 tackles and 2.5 sacks as a sophomore. He had 8 tackles in his first career start against Duke, and matched that with 8 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 pass breakups and a fumble recovery in a win over Colorado. Wimbley started two games as a junior, recording a total of 27 tackles, 2 sacks and 7 quarterback hurries. He had 5 hurries in one game, a win over Wake Forest.
The Browns have agreed to a trade with the Ravens. The Ravens acquire Pick 12 from the Browns, and the Browns move down one slot, to Pick 13, and acquire a sixth-round pick from the Ravens. It's the second trade of the first round. The Broncos acquired the 11th pick from the Rams and used it to select Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler. A very productive pass rusher, Kamerion Wimbley’s impressive senior season accelerated his draft stock to be a potential top five defensive end. He has very good speed and is extremely quick off the edge. Wimbley has ideal size and has stayed away from the injury bug. His durability has allowed him to start over 40 games consecutively. Wimbley plays with great heart, but can be discouraged easily. He is a very quick player, but won’t be the fastest guy on the defensive line. Wimbley will need some time to adjust to the size and quickness at the next level. Overview:
