Height: 6-3
Weight: 241
40 Speed: 4.73*
Position: Defensive End
College: Florida State
Final Grade: M 5.9 Rush-LB

SUMMARY

Wimbley was a difficult player to fairly evaluate because he is so clearly a very competitive player with all the natural athletic ability to make plays -- especially impact plays -- all over the field throughout games. But he does not play up to his ability on a consistent basis. It is amazing that despite all of his inconsistencies, he was still involved in one play out of every 8.9 snaps, which is a very good ratio for the defensive end. The biggest concern is that Wimbley might not be a naturally instinctive football player, which is extremely hard for a defensive end to overcome -- unless he improves his initial burst off the ball he is not going to be able to threaten the corner as a speed/edge rusher in the NFL. Additionally, he does not attack the play aggressively on every snap, which hinders his ability to consistently make plays. Overall, Wimbley is no doubt going to be drafted much higher than ranked because of his flashes of production and very good natural athletic ability, but he will struggle to ever become as consistently productive as he is physically capable of. While he may not have the athleticism and instincts to make the switch to linebacker for a 4-3 defense, his athleticism combined with his good play out in space will enable him to be a productive rush-linebacker for a team that plays a 3-4 defense.

STRONG POINTS

Wimbley is a very good athlete with the foot quickness, playing speed and explosive closing ability to make plays all over the field. He has the strength to jolt the offensive tackle and drive him backward when he bull rushes with leverage and aggressively uses hands to attack the offensive tackle. He has the quickness and agility to avoid blockers very well out in space and has the playing speed to chase downthe running back in backside pursuit on runs away. He is a muscular player who clearly works hard off the field and consistently gives a very good effort hustling and fighting to make plays from sideline to sideline.

WEAKNESSES

Wimbley is an undersized defensive end who lacks the bulk/strength to hold ground vs. offensive linemen run blocks at him and does not have the frame to get too much bigger. Despite having very good natural explosiveness, he does not sense/anticipate the snap well and is almost always the last defensive lineman moving at the snap, which will keep him from being able to threaten the corner as a speed/edge rusher consistently in the NFL. He does not rush the passer aggressively on every snap and is not a productive pass rusher when he doesn't. He does not consistently read the play correctly and often ends up taking his initial step in the wrong direction. Too often he is around the play, but does not turn the corner sharp enough to finish the play. He makes most of his plays when unblocked or blocked by a tight end/running back and struggles to make plays vs. offensive tackle blocks.

POSITIONAL FACTORS
GradeCategoryComments/Description
5.0Read & ReactHe does not consistently read and react well to the play and often takes a step in the wrong direction
5.0Initial QuicknessWimbley is not explosive off the ball and is often a beat late moving at the snap of the ball.
5.5Play StrengthHe flashes strength as a bull rusher, but is not consistent and struggles strength-wise vs. offensive linemen's run blocks.
5.5Use of HandsDoes not consistently use his hands aggressively, but has quick hands to defeat blocks when he uses them aggressively.
5.5Shed BlockerHas strong and quick hands to shed blocker quickly when he uses them aggressively, but is not consistent.
5.5Run at HimWhen he goes against a tight end he consistently disrupts/makes the play, but really struggles vs. offensive line blockers.
5.5Pursuit/RangeHas playing speed and closing burst to chase plays down in pursuit, but is not consistently productive.
6.0TacklingWhen he gets close enough to touch the ball carrier/quarterback, he consistently finds a way to get his man to the ground.
6.0Closing BurstHe has an explosive closing burst when he gets close to the ball carrier/quarterback and they are on his track.
5.5Power RushFlashes ability to be good when he rushes with leverage and uses his hands aggressively to punch the offensive lineman.
5.5Speed RushOnce moving he has quickness to beat offensive tackle, but lacks of burst off ball hinders his ability to get to the corner.
5.5ErrorsThe biggest thing is that he is often a beat late off the ball, but additionally he often takes a step in the wrong direction.

ATHLETIC ABILITYSection Grade: 6.5

Wimbley is a very good athlete and that is the main reason he has been productive despite being undersized and too often playing unaggressive. He has very quick feet, which helps him to accelerate to full speed fast when chasing runs away and he has the playing speed and closing burst to catch the ball carrier and make the tackle from behind. His foot quickness and agility combine so that he can change directions fast -- when he is rushing the quarterback he flashes ability to plant and burst back underneath the offensive tackle through the offensive tackle/offensive guard gap. He has the natural flexibility to bend his knees and pass rush with leverage. The trouble is that despite being a very good athlete with very quick feet, he lacks explosiveness off the ball as a pass rusher -- nearly every snap he is the last defensive lineman to move).

COMPETITIVENESSSection Grade: 6.0

Wimbley is a tough football player when it comes to playing hurt, but it's also a concern that he does not play with a tough, aggressive attitude too often. He has flashed the ability to make big plays in key situations, but he is not nearly consistent enough and if he does not attack the play, he does not make the play. Despite not always playing up to his ability, his overall production has been good because when he makes plays, he tends to make them in bunches. In the games he was graded he was involved in one play out of every 8.9 snaps, which is very good for a defensive end. However, much of his production comes when he is left unblocked or blocked by a tight end/running back and is not nearly as productive when he has to take on and defeat an offensive line block. His inability to explode off the ball hinders his ability to consistently threaten the corner as a speed/edge rusher and will limit his ability to do so even further in the NFL. He has the quick feet and athleticism to be an effective pass rusher when he lines up wide and has space to shake and avoid the offensive tackle's block. He is a competitive team player who always gives a very good effort. And clearly from looking at his physique, he has busted his butt in the weight room. His competitiveness shows in his never quitting on a play -- he consistently hustles and chases hard after ball to make plays all over the field.

MENTAL ALERTNESSSection Grade: 5.0

Wimbley is a smart football player and came across well in some interviews. But his lack of pass-rush moves and bad use of hands to protect his legs from low/cut blocks is a question mark as to his ability to learn from coaches. He is held back mostly by a lack of instincts, which leads to him consistently being the last defensive lineman moving at the snap and often stepping in the wrong direction vs. misdirection plays and ends up out of position. He generally does a good job to maintain his concentration, which is what helps him to always play hard from snap to whistle and never misses plays due to lack of effort.

STRENGTH/EXPLOSIONSection Grade: 5.5

Despite being muscular and defined for a 250 pound defensive end, he is clearly undersized for the position and his frame is not going to allow him to add much more weight. He has started a lot of games at Florida State, but being undersized and playing only approximately 50 snaps in most games questions his durability as a defensive lineman in the NFL. Once the play has begun and he gets close to the ball carrier/quarterback, he has an explosive closing burst to finish plays. But he shows no explosion off the ball rushing the passer, which hinders his ability to threaten the corner as a speed/edge rusher. He has shown the strength to jolt the offensive tackle and drive him backward when he bull rushes with leverage and aggressiveness, but he lacks the bulk/strength to hold ground vs. offensive line run blocks. If he gets high when he bull rushes he gets stacked up at the point of attack.
