Height: 6-3
Weight: 246
40 Speed: 4.62*
Position: Inside Linebacker
College: Miami (Fla.)
Final Grade: M 5.5 ST
SUMMARY

Williams was a disappointing player to grade because after flashing good athleticism in 2004, he lost his starting job during the 2005 season and was not consistently productive. He is a well built linebacker with the size and strength to be strong at the point of attack vs. blockers and to be a hard hitting tackler. He has good all-around athleticism with the quick burst of acceleration and playing speed to chase down plays all over the field, but he does not make nearly as many plays as he is capable of. He is not an instinctive player and is usually a beat late reading and reacting to the play and cannot get back into position to make the play. He struggles to deal with blockers and move through traffic. So when he does not have a clear path to the ball, he does not make many plays. He was a very good special teams player at Miami and he can be a good special teams guy in the NFL. All in all, it's not recommended to draft players who were not starters during their senior seasons, but Williams could be signed as a free agent because of his natural athleticism, competitiveness and ability to contribute on special teams. He probably will never develop into anything more than a backup linebacker and special teams player.

STRONG POINTS

Williams is a good athlete with the playing speed and closing burst to make plays all over the field. He has good size and strength and has shown a willingness to make hard hits/tackles. He shows a willingness to fill aggressively and will take on the lead blocker strong at the point of attack and can clog the hole. He has the speed to pick up running backs out of the backfield and can cover them in tight man-to-man coverage. He really did a very good job in 2005 on special teams --especially on the coverage units.

WEAKNESSES

He lost his starting job as a senior. Williams lacks the instincts you expect in a middle linebacker -- often is a beat late reacting to the play and does not read the play correctly. He will jump outside expecting the outside run and leaves the hole he was responsible for wide open for the cutback. He does not move well through traffic -- he gets bounced around and struggles to get to the ball. Once blockers get a hold of him he cannot shed quickly and gets ridden out of the play too easily.
