 | Babatunde Oshinowo | Height: 6-1 Weight: 305 40 Speed: 5.34* | Position: Defensive Tackle College: Stanford Final Grade: G 5.9 | | SUMMARY | | Oshinowo is the type of defensive tackle that often gets overlooked because he is short and is not a consistent play-maker. He is a good athlete with the natural strength to be a force at the point of attack -- he can clog up the middle of the line and has shown the ability to free up and make the tackle when he is using his hands aggressively. He has surprising athleticism for a short defensive tackle -- he can chase down ball carriers in pursuit and can get all the way outside to make the tackle right after the catch on screen passes. It is important to realize that he is never going to be the type of defensive tackle who flies around the field and makes the big, impact plays. Overall, Oshinowo will probably be drafted lower than he's rated because he only fits into the NFL as a nose tackle in a 3-4 defense or as a nose tackle in a 4-3 defense that uses a nose tackle and an under tackle. He has the natural strength, athletic ability and competitiveness to become a good starting nose tackle if used as a true two-gapper and is not asked to be a playmaker. | | CRITICAL FACTORS | | Size | Initial Quickness | Play Strength | Competes | Play Speed | Instincts | | 5.5 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | |
| STRONG POINTS | | He is a thick-bodied, well-built defensive tackle with the strength to be a real force at the point of attack. He consistently holds ground vs. run blocks, can clog the middle up and can make the plays -- either by freeing up completely or by using his strength to make an arm tackle. He does a good job of getting inside reach blocks, keeps them on his shoulder, and runs down the line of scrimmage to make tackles on runs away. He has good instincts to read the screen pass -- he sniffs it out and has the quickness to get outside to make a tackle right after the catch. He has the strength to jolt the offensive line with a hard punch and can drive him backwards into the quarterback's lap. | | WEAKNESSES | | He is a short tackle, who lacks the explosiveness off the ball to split gaps and disrupt plays in the backfield consistently. He is not a consistent play-maker, and cannot succeed in a one-gap defense. When he loses focus and plays upright and without leverage, he cannot shed blockers consistently and is basically a non-factor. He is not a consistently productive pass rusher -- he has no burst off the ball to shoot the gap and has no real pass rush moves to beat one-on-one pass blocks. | | POSITIONAL FACTORS | | Grade | Category | Comments/Description | | 6.0 | Read & React | His instincts and quick feet help him to consistently read and react quickly to the play. | | 6.0 | Initial Quickness | While he lacks explosiveness off the ball, he does consistently get out of stance and in position quickly. | | 6.0 | Play Strength | He has natural strength, an ability to play with leverage, and the use of his hands gives him good playing strength. | | 6.0 | Use of Hands | He has no real pass rush moves, but he uses his hands well taking on and holding ground vs. run blocks. | | 5.5 | Shed Blocker | He does a good job of shedding run blocks and making tackles, but struggles to get free when he plays up high. | | 6.0 | Run at Him | He consistently stacks the point of attack, clogs the middle, and can free up and make the tackle on inside runs. | | 6.0 | Pursuit/Range | He is surprisingly good at moving through traffic to chase down running backs in backside pursuit. | | 6.0 | Tackling | He does a good job of tackling the ball carrier when he gets close, and he has the strength to make arm tackles. | | 5.0 | Closing Burst | He has a decent closing burst to finish plays when he gets close, but it is not an explosive closing burst. | | 5.0 | Power Rush | He has shown strength to get a push as a power rusher, but does not free up to get the sack often. | | 4.0 | Speed Rush | He's not explosive off the ball to shoot gaps, and has no real pass rush moves. | | 6.0 | Errors | He has no glaring errors, but he occasionally loses focus, stands up and becomes a non-factor. | | | ATHLETIC ABILITY | Section Grade: 6.0 | | He is a good athlete, and it has combined with his natural strength to make him a productive two-gap tackle at Stanford. He has the quick feet to get out of his stance and into good position to take on run blocks strong at the point of attack. His quickness off the ball enables him to get into the backfield when teams try to reach block him -- he can burst in the direction of the play and has the playing speed and closing burst to make tackles in pursuit. His quick acceleration, playing speed and agility enable him to get out to the flat quickly to make tackles on the running back right after he catches the screen pass. He has the natural flexibility to bend his knees, sink his hips and play with good leverage and base at the point of attack. His coordination combines with his quick feet and athleticism so that he can move through traffic surprisingly well; he avoids blocks and closes on the ball carrier quickly to make tackles on runs away from him. | | Q.A.B. | Quick Feet | C.O.D. | Flexibility | Coordination | | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.5 | | | COMPETITIVENESS | Section Grade: 6.0 | | He is a tough football player, who consistently has fought through dings to stay on the field and consistently has taken on offensive line blocks strong and aggressive at the point of attack. He has consistently shown the ability to make the play on important runnning plays, but he does not pressure the quarterback consistently on key passing downs. His overall production has been consistently good against the run and adequate at best as a pass rusher. He is a smart and instinctive defensive tackle, who does a good job of making plays against the run and sniffing out screen passes. He is not explosive off the ball as a pass rusher, and he lacks any real variety of pass rush moves. He consistently gives a good effort on every snap, and his willingness to tie up two offensive line blockers so that teammates can make tackles shows he is a team player. While he does not fly around the field making tons of tackles, he does always give a very good effort and never quits fighting to make tackles until the whistle. | | Toughness | Clutch Play | Production | Consistency | Team Player | Pride/Quit | | 6.0 | 5.5 | 5.5 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | | | MENTAL ALERTNESS | Section Grade: 6.0 | | He is a smart football player, who can learn technique and football well. This is obvious not just because he went to Stanford, but because he consistently uses good technique vs. run blocks and plays with good body position. His instincts help him to consistently get moving quickly at the snap and to sniff out plays well -- he really reads screen passes very well, and he has the quickness and speed to get outside to make the tackle right after the catch. He generally does a good job of maintaining focus, but he occasionally will lose it and end up playing upright and high vs. blockers, and is a non-factor when he does. | | Learn/Retain | Instincts/Reactions | Concentration | | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.0 | | | STRENGTH/EXPLOSION | Section Grade: 5.5 | | He has a good, thick build for a defensive tackle, but is definitely shorter than ideal at under 6-2, which leaves him vulnerable to being engulfed by big offensive linemen. He has been a durable starting nose tackle in Stanford's 3-4 defense, and after taking the punishment of playing nose tackle, teams should be confident in his ability to be a durable NFL lineman. Despite his strength and athleticism, he is not an explosive player -- he has no explosion off the ball to threaten gaps as a gap-shooting pass rusher. He has good playing strength at the point of attack -- he can stack the point of attack vs. run blocks, shed and make tackles. He has shown the strength to hold ground vs. double-team run blocks -- he ties up both blockers, so that the linebacker can stay free and make the tackle. When he bull rushes aggressively, he has the strength to jolt the offensive lineman and can get a push into the pocket, but cannot shed and finish the sack consistently. | | Body Type | Durability | Explosion | Play Strength | | 5.5 | 6.0 | 5.0 | 6.0 | | |
