Leon Williams4/30/06 Leon Williams conference call

(On feeling more comfortable and inside or outside linebacker)- “I really don’t know anything either than middle. I understand the position very well. I can see myself playing outside. I think I’ll be good on the corners taking on a tight end.”

(On where he thought he would be drafted)- “I feel like I am a first round pick. I got the best outcome that I could have received in the situation that I’m in.”

(On his situation at Miami)- “I don’t think I played as much as I expected to play. There were a lot of expectations for me competing at this point. I know I’m in the best situation that I can be in.”

(On the legacy of living up to Miami Hurricane linebackers) – “I really haven’t put too much pressure on myself. I went to Miami for the tradition and I think that I fit in pretty well. I didn’t think there was anything extra that I had to do to make me somebody else.”

4/30/06 General Manager Phil Savage press conference

(On fourth round pick Leon Williams)- “Leon was highly recruited out of high school. He’s from the Brooklyn area and he came here on a visit. At Miami, he played in a rotation with Roger MacIntosh and some younger players. He was a guy that they talked about but, they didn’t sell him like they did other players. When he played, he played well. He got invited at the Las Vegas All-Star game and he stood out there. He followed that up with a strong showing at the combine. He came here on a visit and made some positive impressions with the coaches. When we looked at the inside linebackers, we felt like he was one who really fit the profile. As he learns and adapts to the 3-4, he can certainly cover kicks. He brings tremendous speed and has a physical presence.”

(On Leon Williams rotating at Miami)- “I think it was a combination of a number of things. They made a number of coaching changes at the end of the year. A lot of times, when people are under that pressure, you don’t know why certain decisions are made. We watched him, the coaches watched him and you couldn’t figure out why they didn’t play more.”

OVERVIEW

Regarded as the finest New York high school product since former Green Bay Packers standout

running back John Brockington in the 1970s, Williams provided Miami with a versatile and

extremely valuable cog for their nationally-ranked defense. A 2005 Butkus Award semi-finalist began his collegiate career at outside linebacker, but was moved inside as a junior, replacing former All-American Jonathan Vilma (Jets).

Dubbed by Parade Magazine as the best college football prospect in the New York City area in

25 years, Leon earned All-American from that publication and was a USA Today first-team All-

American as a senior at Canarsie High School. He was named Gatorade Player of the Year for

the state of New York, adding Super Prep All-American and Elite 50 honors.

As a senior linebacker, Williams recorded 98 tackles, 12 quarterback sacks, recovered four

fumbles and intercepted three passes as a senior in 2000. He played tight end during his junior

season, catching 20 passes for 219 yards and three touchdowns.

Williams performed on Miami’s scout team in 2001. He was a special teams terror as a redshirt

freshman, posting fourteen tackles (9 solos) in 2002. He continued to excel on special teams the

following season, producing 22 tackles (16 solos) with a stop for a loss.

He shared time in the middle with Romeo Davis in 2005, registering 54 tackles (35 solos) with 3.5

stops for losses, two pass deflections and a fumble recovery. In 47 games with the Hurricanes,

Williams started only six times, but recorded 146 tackles (80 solos). He had 2.5 sacks for minus

27 yards and 12.5 stops for losses of 44 yards. He gained 51 yards on two fumble recoveries and

also caused a fumble while deflecting four passes.
