Isaac Sowells4/30/06 Isaac Sowells conference call

(On being surprised on where he was selected)- “I was surprised. (Phil Savage) called me and said we were either going to pick you at 110 or 112 because Baltimore had the 111 pick. My mother didn’t even know yet. I’m a little excited. When I read my name I broke down and started crying.”

(On where he played at Indiana)- “I’ve been playing left tackle for the past three years. I played guard after my redshirt year. They said they were going to move me back to guard.”

(On speaking to former Cleveland Brown and Indiana teammate Enoch DeMar)- “I really haven’t talked to Enoch lately. I never kept in too much touch with him after he graduated. I’ve seen enough from a standpoint on watching other Cleveland Browns. It’s a blessing being drafted by them.”

(On his on and off the field attitude)- “I’ve had a mean streak on the field. You don’t want to be a mean guy off the field because you will never have any friends.”

4/30/06 General Manager Phil Savage press conference

(On fourth round pick Isaac Sowells)- “He played left tackle at Indiana. They had three or four different offenses when he was there. I think about mid-year, Isaac really showed what his potential could be for the NFL. He’s a player who will probably be a guard for us although he’s played tackle during his career at Indiana. We’d be hopefully that at the end of 2007, he’d be a candidate to take one of those left or right guard positions.”

ISAAC SOWELLS

Offensive Guard/Tackle

Indiana University Hoosiers

#76

6:03.4-324

Louisville, Kentucky

Dodd High School

OVERVIEW

The team’s anchor at the demanding left offensive tackle position, Isaac was one of the more consistent drive blockers in the collegiate ranks as a senior. His strong base and ability to get in front on traps could see him shift inside to guard at the pro level.

At Doss High School, Isaac was a four-year starter at offensive tackle and defensive end. During his senior season, he recorded twelve solo tackles against eventual Class 4A State Champion Male High School. He also played basketball and competed in track and field. He was a participant at the Kentucky State Track and Field Meet in the shot put.

Sowells redshirted in 2001 at Indiana. He spent the 2002 season second on the depth chart at left offensive guard, logging action in 337 plays that year. Isaac then took over left tackle duties as a sophomore, appearing in 967 snaps, including 82 on special teams. He had his string of sixteen consecutive starts snapped after the fourth contest of the 2004 campaign, when Isaac suffered a wrist injury in practice that would sideline him for the rest of the year. He returned to start every game at left tackle in 2005, competing in 828 plays.

ANALYSIS

Has long, thick limbs with a big back, good waist, huge bubble, developed upper body chest and arm muscles and big thighs and calves…Has the athletic agility to gain movement while keeping his feet…Shows good flexibility changing direction with the balance and quick hand usage to gain position and sustain…Plays with good effort and aggression…Has the functional hand strength to gain separation and the ability to explode into his drive blocks…Gets off the ball with decent initial burst and is consistent in gaining advantage…Very good short area mauler with the cover up ability to keep leverage and control…Has the foot agility and balance to wall off and screen…Gets out well on pulls and traps in the short area…Stays up on his feet and has the hip strike on contact to pull and land on his target in closed quarters…Can kick and slide effectively in pass protection and can move his feet well enough to pick up the edge rushers when working out on an island…Has very long arms and large hands to make reach blocks, lock on and drag down…Moves well laterally and is effective working with his guards on double teams… Has the raw power to maul the bull rushers and is quick to latch on and use his hand strength to steer defenders wide…It is rare to see him on the ground, as he has the lower body power to generate a strong anchor.
