BROWNS SIGN DB PETE HUNTER

The Cleveland Browns have signed DB Pete Hunter as a free agent, the club announced today.  Hunter, 6-2 and 208 lbs., played three seasons with the Dallas Cowboys (2002-04) and had 55 tackles, three interceptions, eight passes defensed and also added 18 career special teams tackles.

Hunter was originally drafted by Dallas in the fifth round, 168^th overall, in the 2002 NFL Draft out of Virginia Union.  Hunter played three seasons with the Cowboys before being traded to the N.Y. Jets on July 14, 2005.  Hunter was waived during training camp by the Jets on Aug. 10, 2005.

Postseason Games:  1 game, 0 starts.

2003:  Suffered a fractured left forearm in training camp and was forced to miss the first three preseason contests…Recovered and was able to appear in all 16 regular season games and totaled 19 tackles, including 18 solo, with 4 PBU and 1 interception…Injuries forced Hunter into the nickel back role as the season evolved and also surfaced as one of the Cowboys top special teams players with 11 special teams stops…Played in the regular season opener vs. Atlanta on Sept. 7…Saw extensive action in the nickel package vs. N.Y. Giants on Sept. 15, with a season-high 5 tackles and 1 PBU…In the win at N.Y. Jets on Sept. 28, made a fourth down tackle of Jets WR Wayne Chrebet that ended the Jets final drive at the eight-yard line…Recorded 1 tackle and 1 QB pressure vs. Arizona on Oct. 5…Recorded 2 tackles and helped limit the Eagles to 115 yards net passing on Oct. 12…Added 2 special teams tackles at Detroit on Oct. 19…Added 4 tackles at Philadelphia on Dec. 7…Recovered a muffed punt at Washington on Dec. 14, and also added an interception as he picked off Tim Hasselbeck at the Cowboys 47-yard line to set up the games final TD…In a playoff clinching win vs. N.Y. Giants on Dec. 21, recorded 2 tackles and 1 QB pressure…In the NFC Wild Card Game at Carolina on Jan. 3, added 1 tackle.

2002:  In his rookie season with Dallas played in 11 games, including two starts, and totaled 27 tackles, including 21 solo, 1 interception for 16 yards and 3 PBU…Was inactive the first two weeks of the regular season…Make his NFL debut on special teams at Philadelphia on Sept. 22…Added 1 special teams tackle at St. Louis on Sept. 29…Played safety in the nickel package vs. N.Y. Giants on Oct. 6…Sat out the next two games with an ankle injury…Returned to action vs. Jacksonville on Nov. 24, and recorded 5 tackles…Added 5 tackles on Thanksgiving Day vs. Washington on Nov. 28…Had a season-high 6 tackles at San Francisco on Dec. 8…Played right corner vs. Philadelphia on Dec. 21, in place of Mario Edwards (neck) and finished with 6 tackles, added his first career interception and 3 PBU…Earned his first career start in place of Edwards in the season finale at Washington on Dec. 29, with 5 tackles.

College:  Finished his career with 10 blocked kicks (punts, FG and PATs)…As a senior, made the move from free safety to strong safety and led the CIAA conference with 11 interceptions in 11 games and finished fifth on the team with 50 tackles and a team-high 13 PBU…Blocked a conference high six kicks…As a junior, returned to the free safety position and finished third on the team with 52 tackles, including 9 TFL…Ranked second on the team with 3 interceptions, including one returned for a TD, and three recovered fumbles, while leading the team with 13 PBU…As a sophomore, moved from cornerback to free safety and led the team with 6 interceptions for 133 yards, added 40 tackles, 2 sacks, 10 PBU and 2 recovered fumbles.

Personal:  An honor student at Atlantic City (N.J.) High School, went on to earn similar honors and his degree in criminal justice at Virginia Union…While in Richmond, was a member of the school’s Student Athlete Advisory Council…Was selected to the CIAA-All Community Works team for his efforts with the K-8 grades as a substitute teacher and volunteer in the after school program.
