BROWNS SIGN DB PETE HUNTER

The Cleveland Browns have signed DB Pete Hunter as a free agent, the club announced today.  Hunter, 6-2 and 208 lbs., played three seasons with the Dallas Cowboys (2002-04) and had 55 tackles, three interceptions, eight passes defensed and also added 18 career special teams tackles.

Hunter was originally drafted by Dallas in the fifth round, 168th overall, in the 2002 NFL Draft out of Virginia Union.  Hunter played three seasons with the Cowboys before being traded to the N.Y. Jets on July 14, 2005.  Hunter was waived during training camp by the Jets on Aug. 10, 2005.

College:  Finished his career with 10 blocked kicks (punts, FG and PATs)…As a senior, made the move from free safety to strong safety and led the CIAA conference with 11 interceptions in 11 games and finished fifth on the team with 50 tackles and a team-high 13 PBU…Blocked a conference high six kicks…As a junior, returned to the free safety position and finished third on the team with 52 tackles, including 9 TFL…Ranked second on the team with 3 interceptions, including one returned for a TD, and three recovered fumbles, while leading the team with 13 PBU…As a sophomore, moved from cornerback to free safety and led the team with 6 interceptions for 133 yards, added 40 tackles, 2 sacks, 10 PBU and 2 recovered fumbles.

Personal:  An honor student at Atlantic City (N.J.) High School, went on to earn similar honors and his degree in criminal justice at Virginia Union…While in Richmond, was a member of the school’s Student Athlete Advisory Council…Was selected to the CIAA-All Community Works team for his efforts with the K-8 grades as a substitute teacher and volunteer in the after school program.
