Browns vs Bears: What was that smell? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Craig Conley; MVN.com

Cleveland Browns rookie linebacker Kamerion Wimbley pounds Chicago Bears quarterback Brian Griese into the ground, the first of 2 pressures in a row for Wimbley on Griese. To best describe what I saw last night, I will borrow a partial quote from the great Dr. Seuss, “Stink, stank, stunk!” If that would have been an injured animal, they would have put it down in the first ten minutes of quarter one. Yes, I hear all of you out there saying, “It is only a pre-season game, get over it.” But if you think that an NFL team should look that lost and that flat at this point in the pre-season, then you had better re-evaluate what you think ready for the first game should look like. The players that are supposed to provide depth on this team were absolutely embarrassing out there tonight. Some acted like they had no idea what their assignment’s were and others had no desire to carry them out if they did. It sure looks to me like it isn’t going to be a question of who Phil and Romeo want to keep, but on how many they can afford to get rid of.

The only bright spot I saw all night was Kamerion Wimbley, whose effort and skill placed him head and shoulders above everyone else. Dave Zastudil had a good game just through the sheer number of kicks he had to produce. When your punter is booting the ball nine times in a game, your offense has serious problems.

Speaking of which, Bernie Kosar made a great point tonight on the television broadcast when Sam Rosen asked why Derek Anderson and Ken Dorsey were getting so many passes blocked at the line of scrimmage. He told him it was because the Bears had scouted the Browns offense and knew that our quarterbacks were using the three-step drop exclusively, and then throwing short passes. They told their defensive linemen to get their hands up early in their rush. Hhhhhmmmm, bet that we see a lot more teams employ that against us starting with New Orleans. Mo Carthon better come up with something better than 5-15 yard passes and screen plays real soon.

Could Travis Wilson be in trouble heading into the final cut? He was on Special Teams last night, but did not get any time at wide receiver that I saw. Would PS and RAC actually cut their third round choice? He was really late into camp and that had to make the hair on the back of RAC’s neck stand on end. That and being way too cocky for his own good.

It was good to see Ryan Tucker get a couple of series in last night. If this offense is to have ANY success at all this year, the first team linemen will have to stay healthy now. Maybe between Ross Tucker and Lenny Friedman the Browns can find an adequate center now. Or even Ephraim when he gets back from his league mandated vacation.

I liked the idea of starting Sean Jones at free safety and Brodney Pool at strong safety. Apparently it didn’t help much but it was a good thought.

I saw better tackling watching the Mentor-Glenville game last weekend than I saw tonight.

Now the cuts will be very, very interesting this weekend. Some guys may have played themselves off of the roster last night, who had it made before the game.

How will this coaching staff rally the team and get them prepared for New Orleans now? There can be no spinning of last night’s debacle, it was a confidence basher. It will be very interesting to see how they come out against the Saints. Tentative or attacking?

I still think that the organization has to make a move to bring in a veteran back-up quarterback. Ken Dorsey is not the answer. Derek Anderson has good potential, but still needs work. If Charlie goes down (Heaven forbid), then so does the offense. The offense as it is anyways, the Mo Carthon way.
