Reuben Droughns was named the Cleveland Browns' Player of the Year and Jeff Faine was given the Dino Lucarelli Good Guy Award by the Pro Football Writers of America, the organization announced Wednesday.
Droughns is the first Browns running back to top the 1,000-yard mark in a single season since Earnest Byner and Kevin Mack in 1985. Through 15 games this year, Droughns had started each game, marking 290 carries for 1,192 yards - the most by a Browns back since Mike Pruitt had 1,294 in 1979. Droughns came to the Browns in an offseason trade with Denver for Ebenezer Ekuban and Michael Myers. In his first year as a tailback last season, the six-year veteran rushed for 1,240 yards as a Bronco. Faine, meanwhile, played and started 14 games this year before suffering a season-ending biceps injury during the team's win at Oakland on Dec. 18.
The PFWA said the third-year pro won the Good Guy Award "for his professional attitude in dealing with the media." After his status as a starter was questioned by the Browns' former offensive line coach, Faine "never ducked a question about the issue and was present in the locker room after good and bad games." Defensive end Orpheus Roye finished second in the player of the year voting, while Droughns finished second for the Good Guy Award, named after longtime Browns employee Dino Lucarelli. Past recipients of the Player of the Year Award are Robert Griffith (2004), Andra Davis ('03), William Green ('02) and Jamir Miller ('01). Former Good Guy Award winners include Daylon McCutcheon ('04), Shaun O'Hara ('03), Corey Fuller ('02) and Tim Couch ('01).
